Harkness Memorial Park Engagement Session | Nikole & Steven

At this point, I should probably just declare Harkness Memorial Park my second home. If you've followed my blog for any length of time, you know I sing its praises in just about every other post. I promise I'm not getting paid to advertise it (although, if anyone from the park wants to strike up a deal, call me!). I just truly love this spot for engagement shoots, weddings, and everything in between. And after you see Nikole and Steven's dreamy session, I think you'll understand why.

Why Harkness Memorial Park is The Spot for Engagement Photos

Nestled in Waterford, Connecticut, Harkness Memorial Park is a dream location for photographers and couples alike. The sprawling gardens, the stunning architectural details of Eolia Mansion, and, of course, the ocean views make for an unbeatable backdrop. It offers such a variety of scenery that I could probably shoot here every weekend and never run out of new angles and inspiration. Harkness has an undeniable charm that fits every love story. But enough about the location (for now)—let’s talk about Nikole and Steven!

Meet Nikole & Steven

Nikole and Steven are the kind of couple that makes my job ridiculously easy. They're fun, laid-back, and completely head over heels for each other. From the second we started the session, I could tell they were going to be a blast to work with. I always encourage my couples to just be themselves, and these two took that to heart in the best way possible.

Rather than stiff, overly posed photos, I like to play little games with my couples to get those real, unfiltered emotions. Traditional posing is fine, but let’s be honest—no one’s love story looks like two people standing still and staring at the camera with forced smiles. Instead, I had Nikole and Steven play a round of the “Drunk Walk” (trust me, it’s hilarious), whisper ridiculous things into each other's ears, and even pop some champagne near the water. The result? A gallery full of genuine laughter, soft in-between moments, and a whole lot of love.

Why I Ditch Traditional Posing for Playful Prompts

One of the things I always tell my couples is that your engagement session should feel like you. If you’re goofy, be goofy. If you’re romantic, lean into it. The best photos happen when you’re having fun and forgetting there’s even a camera there.

That’s why I rely on games and prompts instead of traditional posing. Sure, I’ll get a few classic shots (because Grandma wants something for the fridge), but my goal is to capture your relationship as it is—full of movement, laughter, and all those little moments that make your love unique.

With Nikole and Steven, it was all about embracing the fun. I had them draw pictures on each others cheeks using their noses, twirl around like kids in a field, and even practice their dip kiss for their big day! Every time I told them to “pose,” they’d start giggling, which just made the photos even better.

A Love Story Worth Capturing

At the end of the day, an engagement session is about more than just pretty pictures—it’s about celebrating this incredible season of your lives together. It’s about taking a moment to soak in the excitement before the wedding planning stress kicks in. And if we can do that while running around a beautiful park, making jokes, and creating some unforgettable memories? Even better.

Nikole and Steven, thank you for trusting me to capture your love story. Your session at Harkness was pure magic, and I cannot wait to see you both on your wedding day! If it’s anything like your engagement shoot, I already know it’s going to be filled with love and laughter.
